Devilled Mackerel

Oily fish is super good for you - and mackerel are exactly that... The photos here aren't as good as this BBQ tasted


  • Mackerel
  • 1 tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • 2 tsp Smoked Paprika
  • 1 tsp Ground Coriander
  • 1 tbsp Caster Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp English Mustard Powder
  • 2 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar

Get your fishmonger to gut the mackerel, which should have clear and bright eyes

With a knife, score a couple of lines down each side of the fish so there are more places for the marinade to stick (fishmonger could do this too)

Mix all the marinade ingredients together

Rub the marinade all over the fish, in particular into the scores and cavity of the fish

You can leave the fish for an hour or so before cooking, but you can cook immediately too

Grill, BBQ or Oven Bake at 180˚c – give the fish 4 to 5 minutes either side or 10 to 15 minutes in the oven

This mackerel is delicious with something citrus-ey and / or salad that features fennel
